AUKUS Pillar Two and Undersea Capabilities

The 2023 defence strategic review (DSR) is the most substantial and ambitious approach to Defence reform recommended to any Australian government since the Second World War’. Effective and deployable Undersea Warfare (USW) capabilities are a critical element of Australia’s ability to deploy military power to shape our environment, deter actions against our interest and, when required, respond with military force. AUKUS Partners are collaborating on autonomous underwater vehicles, which will be a significant force multiplier for our maritime forces.

Undersea Capabilities Corporation innovation

Advanced trilateral maritime undersea intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.

Undersea surveillance and response systems are capabilities that are a vital element of our defence strategy. Rapidly emerging technology and innovation offers Navy opportunities to improve its ability to perform the current roles and missions required. Automation, artificial intelligence, digitisation and modular technologies enhance Navy’s ability to operate with increased capability. In particular, the application of persistent undersea surveillance provided by deployed sensors and sea-denial systems will both sustain and maintain Navy’s capability edge.

Undersea Capabilities and Undersea Warfare

Undersea dominance in response to Australia’s new strategy to support regional security.

The development of new and innovative technologies is essential for maintaining a strong undersea warfare capability and integral to the DSR. Under AUKUS Pillar 2 the Undersea Robotics Autonomous Systems (AURAS) project, will pave the way for underwater networks consisting of crewed and uncrewed vessels, or also a networked underwater range enabling the navy to share information and coordinate actions between their vessels. This will allow the Navy to operate more effectively and efficiently and would give it a significant advantage over adversaries.
